Specialist or Generalist?

To define the two according to Oxford Languages:

  • A Specialist is a person who concentrates primarily on a particular subject or activity; a person highly skilled in a specific and restricted field.
  • A Generalist is a person competent in several different fields or activities.

We are mostly taught in school to specialize and narrow on ONE thing. In this modern world, it might be difficult to follow a linear path.

Linear progressions are repetitive.

You would more achieve a sense of flow if you add elements that spark your work.

Be a Specialized Generalist

It is better to try broad activities that spread your work and doing things that you love and fascinates you, letting you to have wide perspectives, opportunities and possibilities.

Point on View: Being a Specialist

It is good to focus on one thing if you are like the Lebron Games or Lionel Messi on your field.

Being a Specialist makes sense only if you’re extremely good at what you do.
